Own Label FAQs

Please read this page in full, for a comprehensive description of the Own Label service and set-up process.

Own label set-up questions

How do I set up my own label?

STEP 1:
Read these FAQs in full.
Please note, we cannot start your Own Label set-up process (or review any sample artwork) until you have purchased an Own Label package and submitted the Own Label Questionnaire that will be sent to you once your order has been processed.

STEP 2:
Purchase your required service i.e. either Own Label Setup (with no pot images) or the Own Label Bundle Offer (includes pot images).
DO NOT purchase "Own Label: 1x NEW PRODUCT LABEL and pot image (as .png)" at £6, or "Premium Product Images" at £10, without first purchasing Own Label.

- Own Label set-up includes the label setup only for ALL currently available products (pot images - are not included). Pot images are the 3D, multi-angled computer-generated renders of the products (i.e. images of your own label products, to feature on your website and in your marketing materials etc), that we can create for you as part of the Own Label Bundle - see below.

- The Own Label Bundle Offer includes the label setup AND the pot images.

STEP 3:
After you have purchased your preferred Own Label option, we will send you an email, after we process your order, with a link to the Own Label Questionnaire. This is normally within 48 business hours after your order is downloaded for processing. Once you have completed and submitted this online form, we will be able to begin the Own Label set-up process for you. We aim to send you a proof within 2 to 3 business days (depending on our workload and if all the required data has been submitted by you).

That's it - quick and simple!

What if you are creating your own artwork?
If you are creating your own artwork for your labels, please ensure you mention this in the Comments section of the Own Label Questionnaire and await instructions. We will need to see samples of your artwork before you create and submit the full set.
Further down this page are design guidelines and links to template files that must be used to assist you in creating your own label artwork, if this is the option you choose.
>> For template files to create your own labels, scroll down to the Label design guidelines and dimensions section on this page.

NB: For a quick guide on how to place a dropship order, please now read the Dropship FAQs page.

dropship order to be shipped to your customer, click here.

> How to add a new product label to your own label range

When we launch new products and if you already have your Own Labels set up with us (as explained above in Steps 1 to 3), and wish to add a new product to your range, you need to purchase a new label setup service.
A)
click here for 1 NEW label setup with premium images (all angles as required for websites) OR
b) click here to purchase 1 NEW label setup with standard images (front and back angles only)

Please remember to provide us with your chosen product name for this new product label setup.
Add your product name into the Comments field during checkout.

How much is the set-up fee for having my own label on products?
See our Own Label Products page for the latest prices and package options.

If you wish to re-sell our products under your own label (i.e. with your own logo and branding), you will need to purchase one of the following Own Label packages:

Own Label: all current labels setup (no pot images) OR

Own Label: bundle offer (all current labels setup PLUS pot images).

If you will be selling online, the bundle offer will be the appropriate package for you, as it comes with multi-angled pot images (3D computer-generated renders) of your own label products to upload onto your site, feature in marketing materials or on social media etc.

Is the Own Label set-up fee charged per product?
NO, this is a one-off fee (not per label design or product). Once paid, we will print your labels for free for all future orders of products you place with us.

Please note: the price paid for setting up your own labels with us (whether you opt for Own Label setup only or the Own Label Bundle) includes the products in our range at the time of purchase. If we introduce a new product at a future date and you require a pot image for this new product, you will need to purchase this separately - click here.

Can I see what my label would look like before purchasing Own Label?
NO, as you can appreciate, producing proofs for customers is a time-consuming process and so we cannot do this before you purchase Own Label. You can view our design templates by clicking on the link below. You also have the option to supply your own artwork. If you are not sure which option you would prefer (our designs or your own artwork), you can purchase Own Label, let us produce a proof for you as part of the setup process and then make your decision at that stage. You can also purchase additional proofs, should they be required.

Can I keep the Specialist Supplements Ltd label designs, but just change the logo, product names and contact details?
NO, our designs are reserved for our own Specialist Supplements Ltd brand and cannot be used by re-sellers unless they choose to sell under our branding, with our logo, product names and contact details etc. The whole purpose of Own Label setup is to establish your own unique brand, which simply swapping a logo etc would not achieve.

What information will I need to supply to Specialist Supplements to set up my own labels?
We will set out all the information we need from you in the Own Label Questionnaire, which will be sent to you after you purchase Own Label (see STEP 3 above), but in summary:

  1. Your choice of design template - click here for available designs (once you have indicated your preferred option in the Questionnaire; the template is then personalised for you). Alternatively, you can supply your own artwork in the required dimensions (see below).
  2. Your company logo as a high resolution (300dpi) jpeg or png - not as a Word, pdf or other file. If possible, please supply the logo on a transparent or white background. If you don't have a logo, we can design one for you - click here for more info.
  3. Your company name and address for the label contact details.
  4. Your website url.
  5. Your contact telephone number (if you want it to appear on the label).
  6. Your unique product names (mandatory - if you are selling under Own Label you cannot keep our product names or use names that are substantially similar) - please see the FAQ below for further details.

How should I name my products?
Your product names need to be different to ours; other than that (and subject to any restrictions set out in these FAQs, legal restrictions etc) you can call them whatever you like.

It is up to you to come up with your own names that help your products to stand out from your competitors, help to promote repeat business for you and give you brand recognition (particularly in web searches, on Amazon etc).

It is also up to you to run any appropriate registered trademark checks etc.

If you wish to keep the names for the following generic products - L-Glutamine, Antarctic Krill Oil and Omega 3-6-9 Oils - you can, or you could add something to make it more personal to your brand. However, all other names must change as they are our company brand names and many are trademarked (e.g. SPOREgone, THERMOthin etc).

Please also note: when choosing your product names, it is important to remember that, as these are health foods and supplements (rather than medicines), you need to be very careful to avoid making what could be construed as medicinal claims under the labelling regulations.

To this end, DO NOT use references to health conditions in your product names (or descriptions, if supplying your own artwork), e.g. constipation, arthritis, menopause, pain, diarrhoea, PMT, depression, oedema etc. Other words to avoid on your labels would be anything associated with "curing", "relieving", "boosting", "aiding" etc any medical condition.

All of the product information available to you once logged into your account is for practitioners and trade customers and for information purposes only. Do not use this information 'as is' on your labels or advertising materials (as stated on the literature).

It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure legal compliance in all respects and, if you require further help you will need to contact your local authority Trading Standards office, trademarks lawyer etc for guidance as appropriate.

A full list of our current products is available in spreadsheet format here. Please populate the blank column called 'Your product name' for each product that you will be selling and then upload the completed spreadsheet to us through the Own Label Questionnaire (which will be sent to you following your purchase of Own Label).

What are stock images?
If you are opting to use one of our template designs (see here), you will note that some templates feature stock images on the labels (i.e. pictures of ingredients etc) and some do not. You will see that, on the gallery page, below each design it states whether or not these are included on the labels for that particular design. For those templates without stock images, it is not an option to add these. If you want these pictures on your labels, please choose a template which already includes them. Please note that "stock images" and "pot images" are NOT the same thing. See FAQ immediately below.

What are pot images?
"Pot Images" are the 3D, multi-angled computer-generated renders of the products that we can create for you as part of the Own Label Bundle (i.e. images of your own label products, to feature on your website and in your marketing materials etc). These images offer excellent value for money, as product photography can be extremely costly.

Can I make amendments to my labels?
If we are designing your labels, you will be provided with a proof of your own label design for approval. At this stage of the setup process, you can make one round of amendments at no extra cost. Additional, or any future, amendments will incur an amendment fee, to be quoted for at the time depending on the scope and type of changes involved.

Similarly, if you are supplying your own artwork, we will carry out an initial approvals process (to check that your samples meet our requirements in terms of dimensions, layout and legally-required content etc). However, once your samples have been approved, it is then for you to ensure that your final artwork supplied for setup (either at the time of setup or in the future) is prepared in line with our latest templates (including as to content) and is free of errors. As mentioned below, while we will of course let you know if we spot any errors, we DO NOT routinely proof artwork supplied following our intial approval process. Following setup of your artwork at our end, ready for printing, any required amendments (that are not a result of formulation or legally required changes) will incur an amendment fee, to be quoted for at the time depending on the scope and type of changes involved.

Please note: Unless you are supplying us with the artwork for the whole label, the information set out in the side panels / back panels (ingredients, usage etc) cannot be amended. The positioning of the text is as required for our print calibration, and the text itself contains product information in a format that is compliant with current UK laws and regulations. There is also very limited space on most labels and so the personalised contact details section can only reference the limited information that we request from you in the Own Label Questionnaire (up to a maximum of 5 lines). Should you require any customisation of the side panels / back panels, please supply the whole label artwork to us in the required dimensions set out below.

Do barcodes appear on Own Labels and/or can I use my own barcodes?
Barcodes are usually only required if you are selling in a physical shop (e.g. that scans stock for inventory purposes). You do not require barcodes to appear on your labels in order to sell on Amazon, unless you are going to be using their fulfilment service - Amazon FBA (see the Selling on Amazon FAQs for more information).

As such, own labels do not come with barcodes as standard.

If you require personalised barcodes because, for example, you wish to sell in a store or wish to use Amazon FBA, you have 2 options:

Option 1:

  • Supply us with your own artwork for the entire label for each product you wish to sell (i.e. including side panels / back panels). You can then incorporate your barcodes into your designs. OR
  • If we are preparing your label designs / you are using our label templates, pay us a customisation fee to add these for you. A quote and full details will be provided upon request. In this case, please do not purchase, create or submit your barcodes before we have provided you will our detailed instructions.

Option 2:

Create your own barcodes and have them printed yourself, so that you can apply them to the labels / product pots when you receive them from us (when you order from us in bulk, we send the pots to you unlabelled). You can then apply your barcode stickers to the labels themselves (if space allows) or elsewhere on the pots - e.g. on the lid, on the base or on the back.

Please note: Even if you supply the barcodes, we are not able to apply these onto the labels for you. The above are your only options.

Selling on Amazon, eBay and similar platforms
If you wish to sell on Amazon, eBay or similar platforms, please read our detailed guidelines here.

Can I change your product codes on the labels?
NO, as the product codes are the only means of identifying a product and they are also very important from a health and safety perspective. The product code is found on the label and also on the pot base, along with the manufacture date and BBE (product best before end date). If you wish to add your own product code, this can be done by adding it after our product code on the label. E.g. DIGESTIVEaid has the product code 'SN014'. This could be changed to read 'SN014 / your code here'. However, you would then need to supply your own artwork for the entire label (i.e. including back / side panels).

Can I have my labels in a different language?
YES, but this is only possible if you supply your own artwork (please see the FAQ directly below). We do not offer a translation service and are not able to add text provided by you to our label templates.

Can I design my labels (whole labels or centre / front panels only) for you to print off?
YES, this is what we would recommend where a more customised design or completely bespoke labels are required, or you need the labels in a language other than English. However, there are some limitations and you will have to comply with certain requirements. For example, we are required by law to include specific information on the labels (see our side panels / back panels). In addition:

  • Artwork you have designed needs to be supplied as high resolution (min. 300dpi) png or jpg files (NOT as pdfs or any other file types).
  • The artwork files need to be saved to the label sizes we require (see below for dimensions). Please DO NOT add bleed.
  • All text featured on the artwork must be a minimum of 1.2mm in height - this is a legal requirement.
  • If you are supplying the whole label (i.e. including side panels / back panels), you must include our product code (preferably in the bottom left-hand corner of the back panel for flat pots, and the bottom right-hand corner of the right panel for round pots). Please ensure that this is clearly legible (a minimum of Arial pt 5 or equivalent and ideally in bold).
  • The individual files must be named in a format that we specify, for ease of identification and compatibility with our software (full details and instructions will be provided on request).
  • We will provide you with instructions on how to submit the artwork to us upon request (please DO NOT upload it through the ticket system).
  • Following approval of your samples, we DO NOT proof the artwork that you provide. You will need to ensure that all the information (including quantities, measurements, spelling, product names, ingredients, usage etc) is accurate. We therefore strongly recommend that you use our label templates as a basis for the label information to ensure accuracy and legal compliance (see the pdf files below in the section called 'Label design guidelines and dimensions').
  • It is up to you to ensure that your labels are legally compliant in terms of your chosen product names, product descriptions and in all other respects. Please refer to the FAQ above on choosing product names for further guidance on, in particular, avoiding what could be construed as medicinal claims.
  • It is up to you to ensure that the artwork is supplied at a resolution (quality) that you are happy with.
  • The artwork is set up for print and used 'as is'. We cannot edit or add to artwork supplied.

We strongly recommend that you do not create your full set of artwork until we have approved a sample in each of our label sizes (see below) first. This helps to ensure that you do not waste your time and money, should we find that the samples do not meet our requirements in some way. Once you have submitted your Own Label Questionnaire, please create a ticket requesting to submit your samples. You will then be provided with further instructions.

NOTE:

  • Food supplements: It is now a legal requirement to specify on the label if a product is a "food supplement". If you are supplying your own artwork, this will therefore need to be included on the labels of the relevant products in text that is easily legible. If you are unsure which products are food supplements, please refer to the templates for guidance.
  • Organic logos: It is now a legal requirement that any own label organic products feature the Soil Association and EU organic logo (including codes and accompanying wording) that we have on our own labels. We have saved our Own Label customers time and money by having our Own Label design templates pre-approved by the Soil Association, meaning you don’t have to pay to register with them yourself or go through label approval processes. However, this means that you have to follow our guidelines for use of their logos. If we are designing the labels for you, there is nothing further for you to do. If, however, you are supplying your own artwork, please ensure you carefully read the section on organic products in the pdfs linked to below in the “Label design guidelines and dimensions” section below.
  • Kosher logo: Own Label customers are NOT permitted to use the kosher symbol (but you can state on the label that the product is kosher). Please, however, bear in mind that if asked to prove it, you would have to use our certificate.
  • Ingredient changes: If choosing to supply us with your own artwork, please bear in mind that we sometimes have to update ingredients, change packaging or label content etc. This may be due to changes to the labelling regulations, or product re-formulations etc. In this case, you would have to reproduce your labels / pot images to take account of such changes (in contrast, if we create the labels for you, we update them with formula changes automatically and free of charge). It is up to you to ensure that your labels and pot images remain up-to-date at all times and that you supply us with replacement artwork as and when required. You should therefore keep a regular eye on the page of our site where all updates are detailed: click here. It is not practicable for us to request such artwork from you, particularly as there is no way for us to know whether you are still selling the product in question, wish to sell a new formula version etc. If you need to submit replacement artwork as a result of a change made by us, please create a ticket for the Own Label team - you will not be charged for the changes. To assist you with identifying changes to the labels from time to time, we suggest you include the label version number that we supply, on your artwork. These are set out in the pdf templates, in the bottom right-hand corner of each individual product template. Click here for an example. If this number has changed when you check, you know a change has been made and your artwork needs updating.
  • Print quality: 99% of customers use our label service and are satisfied with our print quality. However, we are not a print shop. Our labels are digitally printed - we do not print Pantone colours. To see if the print quality of our labels is suitable for your needs, order a product to see the final result. If you require the highest quality glossy labels, or Pantone colours, then we would suggest using the services of a professional print shop and we will supply you with our products UNLABELLED.
  • Edge-to-edge printing: The labels are printed in-house and we do not offer edge-to-edge printing - they will come with a white edge. This is as shown in the templates. If you are not happy with this, your only option would be to use a print shop and have all your own labels printed yourself. However, you would then have to buy from us in bulk and label and ship the products out yourself too.

If I supply you with my own artwork, do I still have to pay the Own Label set up fee?
YES, the Own Label setup costs remain the same whether you supply the artwork or not. This is to cover the time it takes us to liaise with you, insert your artwork it into our software and set it up for print. In addition, please note that included in the one-off set up fee is the free printing of your labels for all future purchases from us.

Once my labels are set up, how do I place own label product orders?
Log into your account and test out the shopping cart. As part of the checkout process, you will be asked if you have your own labels. For a step by step guide on how to place an order (using your own label) to be shipped to yourself or a
dropship order to be shipped to your customer, click here.

Text size
If you are supplying your own artwork, do not make label text smaller than Arial 5 pt (or if you are not using Arial, smaller than 0.9mm in height). This is a legal requirement.

Printable area / colour schemes
We strongly suggest that you avoid using a dark background colour on side panels / back panels, as this can make text illegible when printed. Similarly, blocks of solid colour / colour backgrounds (of any colour) and gradients can result in fine white lines across the label once printed, even when printing on our high quality printer. Only print shops can achieve 100% solid colours. Similarly, very light shapes (e.g. as part of a background) may lose their detail when printed. You can use these colours if you wish, but it will be at your risk if you are not happy with the result and then have to pay an amendment fee to change your artwork. We would always advise ordering a sample before proceeding with the full set.

Please also adhere to the boundary dimensions shown in the pdf files linked to above, for the various sections of the labels. For example, if you are supplying the artwork for the whole label, do not make the front or back panels of the flat pot labels wider than the permitted areas shown. This could result in parts of these panels being wrapped around the spine of the pot. If you do not adhere to our guidelines, you could incur additional costs if label setup has to be redone as a result. .

Follow the supplied label pdf files and templates (linked to above), as they contain all the information required, as well as our detailed requirements for optimum printing.

Other common Own Label setup & packaging questions

Are your labels full wrap-around labels (do the label ends touch when the pot is labelled)?
NO, our SIZE 1 and SIZE 3 labels for the round and glass pots are not full wrap-around.
The SIZE 2 label for the flat letterbox pots covers 3 out of the 4 surfaces.
If you want full size wrap-around labels, you will have to use the services of a professional print shop and purchase your own. We can then supply you with the products unlabelled and you can apply the labels to the pots.
# WHY WE DO NOT SUPPLY THEM:
Full wrap-around labels cannot be accurately applied without a labelling machine and no company will set up a labelling machine for less than a 500 pots run.

Can I have different packaging, shaped pots, colour of capsules, capsules per pot etc for my products?
NO. As our products are manufactured and potted during long runs under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards at the factory, we cannot make any changes to our products or packaging. However, if you want a personalised formula made up, we can quote you for this - minimum run is between 50,000 to 60 000 capsules per a formula. Click here for more info.
No company will set up a capsule counter and potting machine for less than a 500 pots run.

How long does it take to set up my Own Labels?
This depends on our workload and how quickly you provide the correct / required information and thereafter approve the design. If information / approval is not provided in a timely manner, this will delay completion of your labels and may incur additional charges.

Once you have completed the Own Label Questionnaire, we will send you a single label proof for design approval, usually within 1 - 2 working days. Following your approval of the design to be applied across all labels, completion will normally take between 5 - 7 working days (but again, this depends on current workload).

All Own Label jobs are scheduled into a queue. Any required amendments are treated as new jobs, which will then be dealt with in job receipt order.

PLEASE NOTE: You are ultimately responsible for the legality of your labels, website and any other advertising information. Seek advice from your local authorities / legal representatives if you are unsure of any aspects.

Other important information regarding Own Label product orders:

Own label dropship orders:
These are posted out to your clients with your labels on the pots.

Own label bulk or non-dropship orders:
These will be posted out to you unlabelled, along with the printed product labels, your invoice and our Own Label Labelling Guidelines form. You will need to apply your personalised labels to the pots yourself. The included Own Label Labelling Guidelines form enables you to match the product code on the pot base sticker against the label code (also shown on your invoice). Alternatively, if you would rather not label the products yourself, we can do this for you for a small additional fee (15p per product). You will be given this option during the checkout process. Contact us if you have any queries.

Pot images displaying your own label design

How do I get pot images with my own label for my website and advertising literature?

OPTION 1: If you just want one or two images, you can purchase these individually as transparent pngs for either £6 plus VAT or £10 plus VAT each, depending on the number of angles required.

OPTION 2 (recommended): By far the easiest and cheapest option is to make use of our Own Label Bundle Offer, which includes Own Label setup for the entire current product range pl
