What does "kosher" mean?
Kosher is another term for Jewish dietary law (or "kashrut"). Kosher foods are prepared following strict kashrut guidelines, which can vary in different Jewish communities but have the same basic rules. Jewish dietary laws were established in the Old Testament of the Bible, with additional rabbinical decrees handed down through the generations.
Under these laws, consumption of certain animals is prohibited and the separation of dairy and meat is required. Preparation and processing equipment and facilities must be cleaned and sanitised between products. Blood products are not allowed. Foods are also not allowed to co-mingle, so surfaces and utensils must be thoroughly washed and sanitised after each type of food is prepared to avoid any chance of cross-contamination.
The result is pure and hygienically prepared produce.
What is kosher certification?
Kosher certification is provided by a third-party certifying Jewish agency. A representative of the certifying agency visits the applicant's production facilities and thoroughly inspects every aspect of the operation, from the sourcing of foods and materials all the way through to the end of the production process. This level of scrutiny offers the end-user peace of mind both in terms of quality and traceability. Depending on the product, food may be prepared and manufactured under the supervision of a rabbi to ensure that the finished product is compliant with kosher laws.
What does the kosher certification process entail?
Our kosher supplements are certified by Rabbi A. Adler (Kashrus & Medicine Information Service), who visits the manufacuturing site and checks the specifications of the products within our Kosher range. He is then able to confirm that they conform to kosher guidelines and are suitable for the kosher diet.
Why aren't all Specialist Supplements food products, vitamins and health supplements kosher certified?
Due to strict kosher guidelines, some products and ingredients are automatically ineligible (such as those derived from shellfish). Other products and ingredients lack the required documentation and traceability. However, kosher certification can apply to many of our other products and we are actively pursuing kosher certification for these. More will be added to the Kosher approved list over time.
Why kosher foods aren't just for individuals of Jewish faith
While kosher foods are clearly a must for individuals of Jewish faith who “keep kosher”, for other health-conscious individuals from all backgrounds certified-kosher foods and supplements offer a reliable means of ensuring pure products that are produced using highly sanitary methods. In fact, in Hebrew the word kashrut means “fit” or “proper.”
No blood or blood products are allowed; animals must be healthy and slaughtered in a sanitary and humane fashion; and diseased or contaminated foods and ingredients are not allowed. Animals that are considered unclean, such as pigs and shellfish, and bottom-feeding fish such as catfish, are also not permitted. The unintentional co-mingling of ingredients is not allowed, while all instruments, equipment and facilities must be thoroughly sanitised, and must be cleaned after each food is processed to ensure that no cross-contamination occurs.
With the safety of our food supply increasingly being questioned, the stringent and sanitary production requirements for kosher foods are highly desirable. For many people, kosher foods are the pinnacle of purity, quality and safety.
Kosher foods are also actually prepared in a similar fashion (from a hygiene perspective) to Halal foods eaten by Muslims, although there are religious differences. Halal means "permissible" or "allowed" in Arabic and many Muslims consume kosher foods as an alternative or surrogate for Halal, with the notable exception of kosher foods prepared with alcohol.
